Open wounds of the hand Discussion
Open wounds of the hand pose a number of potential problems, even if
described as simple or superficial . Infection, injury to underlying
structures, scar related deformity, chronic tenderness, or painful
conditions affecting the entire hand and arm may follow. Treatment
recommendations must take into consideration wound size, geometry, depth,
location, duration, contamination, associated injuries, physiologic age of
the patient, and patient cooperation as well as other factors. In general,
stiffness is the most common single problem following treatment of a hand
wound. Treatment must be highly individualized and prognosis is difficult
to predict.
