Psychiatric Factors Discussion
Psychological Factors: The management of upper extremity problems may be
more complex and outcome less predictable in patients who have ongoing
psychiatric problems. It is generally ackowleged that for anyone,
psychological effects of stressful life situations may impair pain
tolerance or ability to cooperate with therapy. Altered perception of body
sensations may occur and increase diagnostic uncertainty, especially when
the primary complaints are subjective. Lack of full cooperation may greatly
affect the final result, particularly when treatment involves either
regular exercise or a strict immobilization protocol.
