Prolonged time off work from injury Discussion
Prolonged time off work from injury: A history of prolonged disability time
off work following injury is a measure of both the severity of injury and
the patient's reaction to injury. Prolonged disability time itself is a
harmful influence, promoting the recognized syndrome of learned
helplessness. Loss of independence, self reliance, and self confidence are
common. For this and other reasons, an unusually long recovery in the past
or present is a risk factor for having delayed, incomplete or only
temporary recovery following any type of upper extremity injury or
intervention.
