The MCP joint of the thumb is pinned in extension.
A Web Spacer/Gutter splint for the thumb MCP joint is fitted for continual wear.
5 weeks:
The pin is removed.
A Web Spacer/Gutter splint holding the thumb MCP joint in extension is fitted to be worn between exercises and at night.
Active Range of Motion exercises are initiated 15 min/hr.
7 weeks:
Passive Range of Motion exercises may be initiated.
Taping and/or dynamic flexion splinting may be used as needed to increase passive flexion.
The Gutter splint is continued between exercises as needed.
NOTE:
The initiation of Passive Range of Motion exercises may be postponed or discontinued entirely if an extensor lag is present of is greater than 20 degrees.
