Classification

Except for scaphoid fractures, carpal fractures are classified simply by description of the fracture location (tubercle, body), pattern (coronal, comminuted, etc), soft tissue status (open, closed), and associated ligament injuries (e.g. transscaphoid perilunate fracture dislocation). In a severe high-energy injury, any of the carpal bones may be fractured in patterns that defy neat categorization. In contrast, the scaphoid and hamate represent the majority of carpal fractures sustained in low energy injuries.
